Chronic Back Pain
Most people feel that having a back pain does not merit a visit to a doctor until such time when it becomes recurring or persistent. A common practice in coping with it is bed rest. It is believe that lying down in bed and resting will ease the pain. Bed rest, in some cases, is effective. This might be true if one strains his or her back. But if the pain recurs or persists for more than three months, then it becomes chronic back pain. Pain management then will have to go beyond mere bed rest. A person has to consult the doctor and be diagnosed as to the cause of the chronic back pain. A lot of factors can trigger the pain such as muscle strain, improper posture, physical injuries, etc.
If the chronic back ache is caused by bad posture or incorrect sleeping position, the doctor might initially just prescribe some over the counter medication, hot or cold compress and some exercises. If this does not work, then the patient will have to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of a qualified physical therapist and at most must undertake surgical procedures. Surgery is usually considered as the last recourse unless the doctor deems it necessary to administer such procedures such as spinal injuries.
Practicing preventive measures is still the best way in dealing with chronic back aches with the exception of those caused by accidents. Simple habits such as having proper posture like sitting or standing up straight can go a long way in preventing chronic back aches. Other practices such as bending properly, wearing proper and well fitting footwear can also help. One must also refrain from carrying articles or things which are too heavy for his or her body frame. Improper practices or unhealthy habits if left uncorrected might seem trivial but will have dire consequences.
